More than ever people who have lost a limb or external body part, such as an eye, ear, or breast, will receive a prosthesis to continue their daily routine and function normally in our society. Prostheses are prescribed by a licensed physician. The prosthetic technician provides a vital service to the rehabilitation medicine community and to individuals with disabilities. Body parts such as legs, arms, hands, feet, and most other body parts can be replaced.

The Prosthetic technician assiststs in measuring, fabrication, fitting, repairing, or servicing a prosthesis. They must posess mechanical ability and hand-eye coordination to use laboratory tools safely and effectively, effective organizational, time management and planning skills, good interpersonal and verbal skills for communicating with others, the bility to work effectively as a team member, and to lift fifty (50) pounds of weight.

They maintain their certification status through mandatory continuing education programs and adherence to the BOC Code of Ethics, or similarly, the Code of Professional Reponsibility.
