Medical assistants often accept general Medical Records Technician positions in hospitals, clinics, doctors' offices and physician groups where they perform their daily tasks by use of automated office equipment and various types of office technology. The medical records technician's daily tasks are similar to those of the admininstrative medical assistant's.

Medical records technicians often talk to physicians,or other allied healthcare professionals, to clarify diagnoses or get additional information, answer incoming telephone calls, prepareletters and documents, word processing, filing, faxing and general support for the medical office staff.

Their position often requires a lot of walking and moderate lifting of patient charts as they deliver and retrieve these charts from clinics and practitioners, destroy outdated records, monitor permanent files to ensure accurate filing and update records ensuring new and current information is appropriately filed.

Medical Records Technician's Job Description:

Their duties vary with the size of the facility. The medical records technician must possesses basic knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, techniques, practices, terminology and expressions of professional medical record library science; a knowledge of the fundamentals of medical science; a knowledge of the fundamentals of human anatomy and physiology; and other knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective medical record management services or supervise medical record clerks and transcribers. Most employers prefer to hire Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT), who must pass a written examination offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
