Medical assistants often crosstrain into general Medical Billing Clerk positions in hospitals, clinics, doctors' offices and physician groups where they perform their daily tasks by use of automated office equipment and various types of office technology. The medical billing clerk's daily tasks are similar to those of the admininstrative medical assistant's or medical office receptionist's.

Medical Billing Clerks compile data, compute fees and charges, calculate rates for goods, services; and prepare invoices for billing purposes. They must understand the basic and major medical coverage plans, such as the Fee-for-Service Plans, Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Point-of-Service Plans (POS) and Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) and know the different methods of billing patients and understand the medical billing industry and all it's complexities.

 

Medical Billing Clerk's Job Description:

Responsible for compiling amounts owed to medical facility. Reviews and maintains orders, invoices and records to ensure accuracy. Maintains all patient payment records. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent with 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
